An electric gate without an intercom is a gate you have to walk down to every time someone arrives. On Maidstone's larger properties — the rural farmhouses and oasthouses on the North Downs and Weald fringes, where the gate can sit 20 to 40 metres from the house at the top of a farm driveway — that defeats the point of having a gate at all. An intercom lets you see or hear who is at the gate and release it from inside the house, or from your phone anywhere in the world.

We install, repair, and upgrade intercom and access control systems across the Maidstone area, from Allington and Maidstone East out to Bearsted, Boxley, Detling and Loose. From a simple audio intercom to a full video system with app control, your engineer matches the system to the property and to how the household actually uses the gate.

Intercom and Access Control Options

Audio Intercom

The simplest option. A call station at the gate with a handset or speaker unit in the house. The visitor presses the button, you answer, and you press to release the gate. Reliable and cost-effective — suited to the 1960s-80s estates on Shepway and Penenden Heath where the gate is in sight of the front door and you mainly just need to know who is there before opening.

Video Intercom

A camera at the gate shows you who is calling on a screen inside the house. We fit video intercoms on many Maidstone properties — particularly the rural homes around Boxley and Detling, and the riverside houses near Allington Castle, where the gate is not visible from the living rooms. Seeing the visitor, not just hearing them, is a real security upgrade on properties set back from the road.

App-Based Systems

Modern intercoms connect to your smartphone over Wi-Fi or mobile data. When someone presses the call button at the gate, you get a notification on your phone wherever you are. You see the visitor on camera, speak to them, and open the gate remotely. These are popular with the commuter households along the Tonbridge Road (A26) and the M20 corridor — people who are out during the day and still want to let in deliveries or tradespeople.

Keypad Access

A keypad at the gate allows entry with a PIN code. Common on properties with regular visitors — cleaners, gardeners, dog walkers — who need access when the household is out. We can programme multiple codes and set time-restricted access where needed. Useful on the executive new-builds in Bearsted where several contractors may come and go in a week.

Key Fob and Proximity Systems

For properties with several regular users — family members, farm staff, tenants — a proximity fob system gives each person their own token. Fobs can be added or deactivated individually, which suits oast-yard and farm sites around the Weald fringe where access needs to be managed without handing out gate remotes.

Common Intercom Problems in Maidstone

Video feed lostCamera fault, power supply failureReplace camera unit, check power
Intermittent connectionLong cable run, poor jointsRewire with quality cable, re-terminate
Gate does not releaseRelay failure in intercom unitReplace relay or wiring connection

On the long rural driveways around Boxley, Detling and the Maidstone Downs, the cable run between the gate and the house can be 30 metres or more. Poor original installations often use lightweight cable that degrades over time and causes intermittent faults. Riverside properties near the Medway add a second problem — damp and fog work into the gate call station and corrode the connections. Your engineer replaces failing runs with properly rated cable designed for outdoor burial, and seals the gate-end housing against moisture.

Why Maidstone Properties Need Good Access Control

Maidstone's mix of housing creates specific requirements that a generic intercom system will not meet:

Long driveways. Properties around Boxley, Detling, Loose and out on the Downs routinely have driveways of 20 to 40 metres. The intercom cable run needs planning properly, and any wireless system needs strong Wi-Fi coverage at the gate — which we can advise on.

Riverside damp. Homes near the Medway around Allington and Maidstone East sit in a damp, fog-prone pocket. Control electronics and gate call stations corrode faster here, so the intercom needs sealed housings and the right cable from the outset.

Delivery management. Parcels to the rural addresses on the Weald and Downs fringes often end up dumped at the gate because the driver cannot get in. An app-based intercom lets you open the gate from your phone, even from work, and speak to the driver directly.

Multi-user access. Family homes on the Bearsted and Penenden Heath estates often have cleaners, gardeners and contractors visiting through the week. A keypad or fob system gives controlled access without handing out gate remotes to everyone.
