Gate Automation in Maidstone
Gate automation surveys in Maidstone. Automate your existing gates with CAME, BFT, or Nice systems. Gate Safe trained, fully insured. Call 07542 024681.

Many properties across Maidstone already have manual gates — wrought iron and stone-pillar gates on the period homes and oasthouses, wooden five-bar gates on the rural holdings around Boxley and Detling, steel and aluminium on the modern builds in Bearsted and Penenden Heath. Automating these existing gates is often more practical and cost-effective than replacing the entire setup. We survey the site, recommend the right motor system, and handle the installation.
We cover Maidstone from our base in Horsham (around 60-70 minutes via the M25/M26/M20), and have automated gates on properties across the area — from the Medway riverside homes around Allington and Maidstone East to farmhouse entrances out on the North Downs.

What the Automation Survey Covers
Before any motor goes on a gate, we need to see the site. Every gate is different — weight, width, hinge condition, post strength, power supply proximity, and clearance all affect which motor system will work. The survey is a detailed, on-site assessment.
Gate Assessment
We measure the gate leaf weight and width, check hinge condition and post integrity, and assess the gate material. In the Maidstone catchment, the wooden five-bar farm gates and oast yard gates around Boxley, Detling and the Weald fringe are often heavier than owners expect — solid oak or hardwood frames absorb moisture over winter and gain weight. The motor needs to match the load, or it will burn out within a few years.
Post and Foundation Check
The Maidstone area crosses two distinct geologies — Wealden clay south of the river, chalk-overlain on the North Downs north of it — and gate posts respond to seasonal weather differently from one street to the next. Posts set in shallow foundations will shift over time. We check whether the existing posts can support a motor or whether they need reinforcement. On the older stone-pillar gates and on properties along the Tonbridge Road corridor, this is the single biggest factor in choosing the right system.
Power Supply
The motor needs a dedicated power supply — typically a 240V feed from the house to the gate position. We check what is already in place and advise on the cabling route. On the riverside properties near the Medway in Allington and Maidstone East, damp control electronics are a known risk, so we plan for raised mountings and a sealed cable route. On the rural properties around Boxley and Detling, driveways of 20-40 metres mean armoured cable is essential.
Motor Recommendation
Based on the gate weight, type, and site conditions, we recommend a specific motor system. For most Maidstone residential properties, this will be a CAME or BFT system, with Nice a common choice on newer developer-fitted gates in Bearsted and Detling. CAME swing motors suit the bulk of modern detached and new-build properties. BFT underground motors suit the period properties and stone-pillar gates where a visible motor arm would be unacceptable.
Safety Requirements
All new gate automation must comply with current safety standards. Many of the older 2000s installations on the Bearsted and Penenden Heath estates lack modern safety devices, and we won't repeat that. We specify the safety devices needed — photocells, safety edges, warning lights — and include these in the quote. This is not optional. Automated gates are machinery, and they must be safe.
