An electric gate without an intercom is a gate you have to walk to every time someone arrives. On Hove's larger Edwardian villas — where the gate sits at the foot of a long front garden along The Drive or Hove Park Road — that means crossing the whole frontage just to find out who is at the gate. An intercom lets you see or hear who is there and release the gate from inside the house, or from your phone wherever you are.

We install, repair, and upgrade intercom and access control systems across the Hove area. From simple audio intercoms to full video systems with app control, your engineer matches the system to the property and the way it is used.

Intercom and Access Control Options

Audio Intercom

The simplest option. A call station at the gate with a handset or speaker unit in the house. The visitor presses the button, you answer, and you press a button to release the gate. Reliable and cost-effective. Suitable for properties where you just need to know who is there before opening.

Video Intercom

A camera at the gate shows you who is there on a screen inside the house. We fit video intercoms on many Hove properties — particularly the double-fronted Victorian houses on the Hove Park avenues, where the gate is set well back behind a mature front garden and cannot be seen from the door. Being able to see the visitor, not just hear them, is a significant security upgrade.

App-Based Systems

Modern intercom systems can connect to your smartphone via Wi-Fi or mobile data. When someone presses the gate call button, you get a notification on your phone — wherever you are. You can see the visitor on camera, speak to them, and open the gate remotely. We install these on properties across Hove and Aldrington, and they are particularly popular with homeowners who commute into Brighton or London and want to let in deliveries during the day.

Keypad Access

A keypad at the gate allows entry with a PIN code. Common on properties with regular visitors — cleaners, gardeners, dog walkers — who need access when the homeowner is not in. We can programme multiple codes and set time-restricted access where needed.

Key Fob and Proximity Systems

For properties with multiple regular users — family members, tenants, or the several households who share a converted villa — a proximity fob system gives each person their own token. Fobs can be added or deactivated individually, which is genuinely useful on Hove's many period conversions where occupants change and a single shared gate code is hard to manage.

Common Intercom Problems in Hove

ProblemTypical CauseOur Fix
No sound from gate stationWiring fault, salt-air damage to speakerDiagnose, replace speaker or rewire
Video feed lostCamera fault, power supply failureReplace camera unit, check power
Intermittent connectionLong cable run, corroded jointsRewire with quality cable, re-terminate
Gate does not releaseRelay failure in intercom unitReplace relay or wiring connection
App not connectingWi-Fi range, router configurationInstall Wi-Fi extender, reconfigure

On Hove's avenue properties, the cable run between the gate and the house can be 20 metres or more across a long front garden. The salt-laden air off the Channel — milder than Brighton's seafront but still a factor within a mile of the coast — corrodes terminals and joints over time, causing intermittent faults. Your engineer replaces failing runs with properly rated cable designed for outdoor burial and seals the connections against moisture.

Why Hove Properties Need Good Access Control

Hove's property types create specific requirements that a generic intercom system will not meet:

Long front gardens. The Edwardian villas along The Drive and the Hove Park avenues set the gate well back from the house. A wired intercom needs the cable run planned properly across that distance, and app-based systems need strong Wi-Fi coverage at the gate — which we can advise on.

Shared-driveway conversions. Many of Hove's large Victorian and Edwardian houses have been split into flats sharing a single gate. A multi-handset intercom or a fob system lets each household answer the gate and manage access without arguing over one shared remote or PIN.

Delivery management. Parcels to the avenues are often left at the gate when the driver cannot get past it. An app-based intercom lets you open the gate from your phone — even from an office in central Brighton — and speak to the driver directly.

Multi-user access. Family homes around Tongdean, Hangleton, and West Blatchington regularly have cleaners, gardeners, and contractors visiting. A keypad or fob system gives controlled access without handing out gate remotes to everyone.
